We watch them daily and they occupy space on our smart devices. But do we really know who’s leading the streaming market here in Malaysia. Well, international streaming guide, JustWatch has just revealed the SVOD market shares in the second quarter of 2021.
JustWatch helps over 20 million users per month to find something great to watch on Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, etc. across 52 countries. According to their report, the launch of Disney+ Hotstar in early June proved to be successful.
Despite only being live for one of the three months in the quarter, it jumped to 5% market share and is now tied with HBO GO and just 1% below Prime Video. Iflix trails Viu by a 7% margin and Netflix remains the market leader by 9%.
Market share development in 2021
Interestingly, in just one month, Disney+ Hotstar jumped to 15% following its long-awaited launch and surpassed Iflix, Prime Video, and HBO GO. The success of Disney+ Hotstar had a clear impact on all of the other streaming services in Malaysia, as all major players lost market share in Q2.
The arrival of the Disney streamer had undoubtedly impacted other major players in the market.
Both the launch of Disney+ and Apple TV+ in November 2019 resulted in an immediate downturn in market shares for Netflix and Prime Video. The two largest players have remained relatively constant since February of 2020.
As Disney+ keeps expanding to new markets, its market share continues to rise with no signs of stopping. To find out more click here.
