So, there is a new Willy Wonka film in the works and Timothée Chalamet has been cast as the lead character. The new film will be directed by Paul King (Paddington) and will focus on the earlier days of the character before he became the chocolate king.
Playing Willy Wonka is another big scoop for Chalamet. After all, the role was famously played by Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp. The new film is based on Roald Dahl’s classic children’s novel, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
However, the new film will be an original take on the character, focusing on a young Willy Wonka. The story will centre on the character in his youth and set years before he opens his iconic chocolate factory. Naturally, this means there will be no Charlie Bucket, Golden Ticket or (possibly) Oompa Loompas.
The new Wonka film will be released in mid-March 2023. Chalamet will be seen next in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune, arriving in cinemas this October.
