Li Jun Li talks to Pass The Popcorn on The Exorcist S2, the horror genre and what her co-stars did on set to lighten the mood of the production.
Tell us about your character and how she has grown?
I played Rose Cooper. Rose and Andy (Jon Cho’s) have some history together which you would learn about it later on. She is a social worker and she has been sent on to the island where his house is and to check out on how he is doing with his foster family. She is a very passionate person when it comes to what she does. I think that is something that she shares with Andy as well.
What was your reaction watching the original film?
I did watch when I was a kid so I don’t remember it that much but I did watch the 1st season. It was exciting. However I have visited this staircase of where the original priest had fallen from the movie, so it was pretty scary and we took a photo.
What made you decide to take on a role in a horror genre?
Personally, I was excited because this is a role that is unlike other roles that I have played. I have always played someone in the police force for a long time and someone who is a little more emotionally unavailable. I find Rose to be vulnerable, compassionate and she’s got human flaws that we all could relate to but at the same time she has got depth of a character that I have always wanted to portray.
I have never done horror before and reading the script creeps me out. It makes the hair on my neck stands up but it also gets me really excited to these scenes. It is scary and I try not to read it at night.
What do you do between takes on set to keep things light?
It is not difficult everyone is just so goofy. I know it is such a serious show but we are such a bunch of goofballs, laughter all around.
What is your all-time favourite horror movie?
I am not going to say favourite as I am actually quite a worse when it comes to horror films. So I am going to say the thing that scares me most recently is The Ring. It was terrifying I couldn’t close the door to my bedroom for like a month after I watched it. The Ring, the American version already scares me so much that when I heard that it was based on an original Japanese film I didn’t want to bother with it. I have seen a few scary Japanese horror films a few years ago and now don’t want to expose myself to that.
