The Marvel Cinematic Universe will welcome its latest instalment this November with The Marvels. A superhero team-up adventure, the film sees the return of Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel and Monica Rambeau. With The Marvels set to arrive in several months’ time, Marvel Studios has released a first look teaser trailer.
Marvel’s new adventure brings together the characters introduced in both film and Disney+ series. We naturally see Carol Danvers (Captain Marvel) who gets a measure of back-up from Kamala Khan (Ms. Marvel) and Monica Rambeau (WandaVision). Fan-favourite Nick Fury is also along for the ride, no doubt to further hype his involvement in the MCU in the upcoming Disney+ series, Secret Wars.
Overall the first look teaser for The Marvels presents a much lighter tone, leaning more towards the Ms. Marvel series. There’s a ‘Freaky Friday’ feel to the superhero film, with the characters exchanging places as seen in the short clip.
In terms of plotline, Marvel’s brief synopsis offers a hint of what to expect. According to official release:
“Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. However, unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team-up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as ‘The Marvels’.”
As the first look trailer alludes to, all three heroes’ superpowers are somewhat tied together. But most significantly, the new film seems to adopt a comedic spin. Although humour has played a part in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this time around it seems to be the forefront of the new movie. It was also a major driver for the She-Hulk series. As such, we do wonder if this new direction is a one-off for the MCU or will it be a focal point for future superhero films and series.
The Marvels arrives in cinemas in mid-November. Check out the teaser trailer below.
