It looks like there is still a market for 80s action heroes with news that The Expendables 4 is happening. The fourth instalment to the action franchise is due to begin production in October.
The fourth film was rumoured for quite a while. However with the dismal performance of The Expendables 3 due to an online leak, those plans were shelved. Recently though, The Hollywood Reporter claimed that original stars Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Dolph Lungren, and Randy Couture are returning for the fourth film.
This marks the first film since 2014 for the Expendable crew. Joining the actors for another action-packed romp are Tony Jaa, Megan Fox, and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson. Andy Garcia has also recently joined the production.
The new film will be directed by Scott Waugh (Need For Speed). Not much is known about the plot except that it will likely serve as a transition towards a younger team. The third film explored that dynamic, but it looks like Lionsgate may continue with that trajectory.
There was also a rumour that an all-female spinoff was being planned. However those plans seem to be scuppered for the time being. Chances are if The Expendables 4 is a sizeable hit, then we could see Lionsgate expand on the franchise once more.
Previous actors who have joined the franchise include Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Terry Crews, Wesley Snipes, Bruce Willis, Jet Li, Chuck Norris, Steve Austin, Jean Claude Van Damme and more.
