My Kitchen Rules is the hottest and most popular cooking competition show in Australia. The seventh instalment of the popular cooking competition will also see renowned UK chef Rachel Khoo, who is of Malaysian Chinese and Austrian descent step in as a judge on the show.
This season, My Kitchen Rules will also see Indonesian sisters Tasia and Garcia, the only Asian pair in the competition. Passthepopcorngoes one on one with the My Kitchen Rules participants to find out what they bring to the competition…
What do you think gives you an advantage over the other competitors in MKR?
Gracia: I think it is how we can communicate openly with each other. In this competition I think that’s actually very important. We see teams that kind of do not communicate as well and go home because they didn’t want to hurt each other’s feelings but Tasia and I have no problem or reservations when it comes to communicating or voicing our opinions to one another.
How have you prepared yourselves for this competition?
Tasia: we did a lot of recipe testing and we just practiced a lot. We looked at a lot of cookbooks to find ideas and inspiration before customizing each dish with different flavours and ingredients. That’s how we sort of invent our style of cuisine.
What would be your go to or winning dish for the contest?
Gracia: Oh, our signature dish is the barramundi. It’s served deep fried with a green apple and coriander dressing or a tamarind dressing. I think that’s our signature dish.
What kind of dynamic do you bring to the show?
Gracia: We’re quite loud (laughs)
What are your post MKR plans?
Gracia: I think we were sort of following our plan. I think the next step would be to work towards the sauce, releasing our sauces, as well as I think the private dinners and the catering at the moment that wasn’t really planned.
