Video game adaptations have never quite resonated well with audiences. But the trend is changing due to recent successful iterations. Sonic the Hedgehog and Unchartered are prime examples of this acceptance by audiences. There’s a high chance that Gran Turismo will follow suit based on its first look teaser trailer.
Based on the inspiring true story of an impossible dream, the teaser for Gran Turismo does indeed look impressive. Directed by Neill Blomkamp, the film is based on the Playstation Studios video game. However unlike most video game to film adaptations this one is rooted in reality.
The screenplay by Jason Hall and Zach Baylin centres on the incredible true story of Jann Mardenborough. The British professional racing driver is a winner of the GT Academy competition, beating 90,000 entrants for a chance to drive for Nissan at the Dubai 24 Hour race. Sony Pictures has confirmed that the story of Mardenborough is the focal point for the movie, and there’s no doubt it will be a dramatization of the events.
As seen in the teaser of the film, the footage puts audiences in the thick of the racing action. The film teases stunning race sequences, super-fast cars and incredible star power. Gran Turismo boasts talents such as David Harbour, Orlando Bloom, Archie Madekwe, Darren Barnet, Geri Halliwell Horner and Djimon Hounsou.
Gran Turismo is set to arrive in cinemas in summer 2023. However, its one of the few film and TV projects that Sony has in the pipeline. There’s a Ghost of Tsushima project directed by Chad Stahelski. There’s also The Last Of Us, coming to HBO GO this month. Other projects being planned include Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War, and Twisted Metal.
