The new trailer for Soul addresses a number of subjects such as the afterlife, which is pretty darn deep for an animated feature. But hey, this is Pixar after all and after guiding us through films with similar subject material like Coco and our emotions in Inside Out, I guess this is pretty much par for course for the Disney studio.
Anyway, Jamie Foxx provides the voice for Joe Gardner in this tale. Joe is a middle-school band teacher who gets the chance of a lifetime to realise his dream by scoring a gig to play at the best jazz club in town.
But one small misstep takes him from the streets of New York City to The Great Before – a fantastical place where new souls get their personalities, quirks and interests before they go to Earth. Determined to return to his life, Joe teams up with a precocious soul, 22, who has never understood the appeal of the human experience.
As Joe desperately tries to show 22 what’s great about living, he may just discover the answers to some of life’s most important questions.
Also lending their voices to the characters in Soul are Tina Fey, Ahmir Questlove Thompson, Phylicia Rashad, and Daveed Diggs. The film also boasts an original score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross as well as new jazz music by Jon Batiste.
Soul is scheduled for a mid-June release.
