With X-Men: Apocalypse set to begin filming and standalone projects, Gambit and Deadpool also ramping up their production, the X-Men Cinematic Universe seems to be in a very healthy place. However, with X-Men: Apocalypse currently on its trajectory to close out the trilogy that began with X-Men: First Class, we won’t see seeing franchise stars such as Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen returning to the series. Or will we?
In a recent interview with Stewart let slip that McKellen will be reprising his role as Magneto for X-Men: Apocalypse. “Yes, I understand that it seems to be very unlikely that I will be in the next X-Men movie, which is almost getting ready to start shooting in Montreal. But Magneto, Ian McKellen, is certainly going to be in it,” commented Stewart in an interview with Oregon Live.
Although it would be a bummer not to see the veteran actor in the sequel, there is still a chance we’ll see Stewart return as Professor X after all. “What I’m very excited about is that we have been talking about a Wolverine movie, which would team Hugh Jackman and myself together,” revealed the actor. “Wolverine and Professor Xavier – that would be a very different sort of X-Men from the four movies that I’ve already done.
Certainly a buddy pairing with Wolverine and Professor X could be an enticing premise even more so after the ‘reset’ to the universe at the end of Days of Future Past. In fact, Wolverine 3 may well offer a continuity of sort with original franchise stars such as Famke Janssen, James Marsden and Halle Berry. After all, X-Men fans still need an answer as to what happen due to the altered universe, which was caused by Wolverine travelling to the past.
