After going on an intergalactic trip in the Marvel superhero film, Thor: Love & Thunder, Taika Waititi is now back on earth with a new sports tale. The trailer Next Goal Wins, is Waititi’s latest film, one that tells the remarkable true story of a struggling football/soccer team.
Directed by the Academy Award Winner responsible for Jojo Rabbit and Thor: Ragnarok, Next Goal Wins follows the American Samoa soccer team, infamous for their brutal 31-0 FIFA loss in 2001. With the World Cup Qualifiers approaching, the team hires down-on-his-luck, maverick coach Thomas Rongen (Michael Fassbender) hoping he will turn the world’s worst soccer team around in this heartfelt underdog comedy.
After big budget spectacles in the Marvel Universe, Waititi’s latest film could be the film that once again showcases his abilities as a great storyteller. A production of Searchlight Pictures, the film is based on the documentary of the same name by Mike Brett and Steve Jamison. The film also stars Elisabeth Moss, Oscar Kightley, Uli Latukefu, Rachel House, Kaimana, David Fane, Beulah Koale, Chris Alosio, Taika Waititi, Will Arnett and Rhys Darby.
