Duncan Jones has a tough job ahead. He’s got to do what few directors have had much success worth – take a video game property and turn it into the lucrative franchise. Fortunately for Jones, who gave us top-notch films like Moon and Source Code, he’s got an ensemble cast at his disposal and he’s going to adapt Warcraft.
The best-selling video game is set to hit theatres in 2016 and Legendary Pictures have already release the confirmed cast list of the film. And some of them are rather surprising choices indeed.
Fighting on the side of the Alliance is Travis Fimmel who will be cast as Anduin Lothar. Obviously Fimmel’s time on History’s Vikings has done him good because he’s set to portray the lead protagonist for the Alliance, who is a war hero who has sacrificed everything to keep the people of Azeroth safe.
Joining Fimmel on the side of the Alliance is Dominic Cooper (Dracula Untold) who will portray King Llane, the leader of city of Stormwind, Ben Foster (X-Men: The Last Stand) as Medivh who is a mysterious and reclusive protector who wields formidable power. Paula Patton (Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol) will play Garona, a strong-willed survivor who’s allegiance is torn between the Alliance and the Horde.
As far as the Horde goes, they will be headed by Toby Kebbell (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) who will play Durotan, the noble Chieftain of the Frostwolf Clan. He will be joined by Clancy Brown (TV’s Sleepy Hollow) who will star as Blackhand, one of orc-kind’s most fearsome and titanic war chiefs. Warcraft will also benefit from major Asian star power with Daniel Wu portraying Gul’dan, a supreme orc ruler who is fuelled by dark magic that even he cannot control.
In addition to the cast reveal, Legendary Pictures have also revealed two new posters for Warcraft, which you can check out after the jump. Warcraft comes to theatres March 11th, 2016.
