In a surprising casting move, Wonder Woman 2 director, Patty Jenkins has officially named Kristen Wiig as the Cheetah for the upcoming superheroine sequel. Wiig’s casting is somewhat surprising considering her vast background in comedy, specifically her big start in Saturday Night Live.
But the actress has done a couple of serious turns in films such as Mother! and The Skeleton Twins. However, playing the Cheetah will bring on new challenges for Wiig in both dramatic as well as physicality.
Jenkins officially made the announcement via social media stating:
“So excited to confirm the most thrilling news. Yes! It’s true! So incredibly lucky to welcome the sensationally talented Kristen Wiig to our Wonder Woman family. Can’t wait to finally work with one of my favorites. And SO excited by what we have planned. #Cheetah!!! @GalGadot”
Cheetah first appeared 75 years ago in the Wonder Woman comic books. To date she’s been one of the heroine’s most formidable opponents in both comic and animated form. Wonder Woman 2 will mark the character’s first appearance in a live-action film.
In terms of plotlines, there’s no word yet regarding where Jenkins intends to take the sequel. According to most reports, Wonder Woman 2 will likely take place in the 80s, revolving around the Cold War.
