Star Trek 3 was pretty much drifting in the outer realms of the Delta Quadrant in the last few weeks, especially after it was announced that Roberto Orci will be leaving the production as director. But now it has been revealed that Paramount Pictures has secured the talents of Fast & Furious director, Justin Lin to captain the project.
Lin is set to take over from Orci and direct the sequel but the latter will be staying on as producer. Star Trek 3 has had numerous issues with its script and it’s unclear at this time if Lin will be involved in helping retool the entire script, which has reportedly gone back to the drawing board.
It is also being reported that Paramount wants to steer the Star Trek franchise towards a more light-hearted and action-oriented approach similar to that of the Guardians of the Galaxy. The original Star Trek 3 was also rumoured to have the involvement of William Shatner, but now with these new developments, it looks as if we may not see the original Kirk in this one after all.
Star Trek 3 is still scheduled for a 2016 release.
