Fox has released the final Dark Phoenix trailer, the film, which will officially end the X-Men franchise as we know it under the auspices of the studio. Disney will surely revamp the franchise somewhere down the road and so this movie arrives more of an afterthought despite it marking the end of the X-Men saga.
Frankly it is not down to the fact that the property is now with Disney but more so because of the lacklustre film that precedes this new adventure. X-Men: Apocalypse hugely disappointed and cast a blemish on an otherwise rather good revamp of the franchise following First Class and Days of Future Past.
So now we have Dark Phoenix, which is re-hashed somewhat for this new adventure. For fans not familiar with the source material, it basically involves Jean Grey turning into a big baddie due to her malevolent powers. As seen by the previous trailers, Jean loses all control and eventually winds up killing some core characters.
Although the stakes seem high on paper, Dark Phoenix isn’t ‘epic’ in the large scheme of things as it will ultimately mark the final outing for the X-Men under Fox. And it is looking like it may well go out on a whimper.
Dark Phoenix is directed by Simon Kinberg and stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters, and Jessica Chastain.
The film arrives in cinemas this June.
