Paramount Pictures has announced that Coming 2 America will arrive in March 2021 on Amazon Prime Video. The streamer closed a deal with the studios, which will see the long-awaited sequel air exclusively on the platform.
The film was originally scheduled to arrive in cinemas in December 2020, but due to the pandemic, plans were forced to shift. The new deal also allows Paramount Pictures to turn a decent profit on the film, without relying on cinemas and the box-office, which have taken a serious hit this year.
2 America is a follow-up to the 1988 comedy hit
directed by John Landis. The film saw Eddie Murphy portray Prince Akeem from
the African nation of Zamunda who travels to the United States to find a
companion. The film also featured Arsenio Hall as the prince’s aid, Semmi and
Jones as King Jaffe.
The sequel will reportedly follow Akeem who is on the verge to becoming a King only to discover that he has a son that he never knew about. To honour his father’s wish to groom his son as a newly-crowned prince, Akeem must once again to return to America.
The comedy is directed by Craig Brewer and will see both Murphy and Hall return to reprise their characters from the first film. Like the first film, expect the actors to also double up playing other roles in the film as well such as Sexual Chocolate singer Randy Watson and Reverend Brown.
Also returning from the first film are Jones, as well as Shari Headley and John Amos. The new cast members of Coming 2 America include Jermaine Fowler, Leslie Jones, Tracy Morgan and Wesley Snipes.
Coming 2 America will be released on Amazon Prime Video in March 2021.
