Superhero fatigue? Well, evidently not at Warner Bros. who have just released the first trailer for Blue Beetle. Set to release in mid-August 2023, the film sees Xolo Maridueña leading the film as the titular hero.
Blue Beetle has been an interesting project for Warner Bros. and the DCEU. Originally planned as an HBO Max release alongside Batgirl, it is now scheduled for a cinematic release. We do wonder what levels of confidence Warner Bros. has with this film considering Batgirl being canned altogether, despite almost completed.
That said, Blue Beetle may just be a one-off project just to regroup some of the studio’s investment. After all, DCEU is set for a massive shake-up in the near future with James Gunn and Peter Safran leading to revamp the superhero cinematic universe.
About Blue Beetle
From Warner Bros. Pictures comes the feature film Blue Beetle, marking the DC Superhero’s first time on the big screen. The film, directed by Angel Manuel Soto, stars Xolo Maridueña in the title role as well as his alter ego, Jaime Reyes.
Recent college grad Jaime Reyes returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it. As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab.
When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armour capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Superhero Blue Beetle.
As seen in the first Blue Beetle trailer, Maridueña is joined by Susan Sarandon, Harvey Guillian, George Lopez, Raoul Max Trujillo, Belissa Escobedo, and Bruna Marquezine. The film is one of three final films in the current DCEU alongside The Flash and the Aquaman sequel to be released this year.
