1997’s Anaconda was critically-panned but it went on to not only make a decent killing at the box-office but also became a cult classic creature feature. Now Sony is apparently looking to emulate the success of The Meg with a reboot attempt on Anaconda in the hopes it turns into a monster franchise of its own.
The original film starred Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube, Eric Stoltz, Owen Wilson and Jon Voight in a villainous turn. The premise of the film focused on a documentary team who heads to the Amazon only to cross paths with a man-eating giant snake.
The film produced decent results at the box-office and it also spawned a number of direct-to-video sequels and spinoffs. But Sony probably has ‘bigger’ plans for Anaconda.
The Meg probably provides the best possible template for modern creature feature with its simple premise that lured audiences in to watch Jason Statham essentially fight a gigantic shark. Grossing over USD500 million at the box-office, the film emerged as one of the surprises of 2018.
Recent reports claim that Evan Daugherty (Divergent, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) has been roped in to pen the draft for the new story.
