‘Bad guys doing good’ is their motto, and the Imperial Stormtroopers of the 501st Legion Malaysia Outpost are committed to making a difference wherever they go. As fans around the world gear up for fan-created Star Wars Day on May the Fourth, the 501st Legion in Malaysia are likewise ramping up their efforts to give back to society.
“It’s important that we as Malaysian fans are able to make a positive impact in this nation through our passion for Star Wars,” says 501st Legion Malaysia Outpost Commanding Officer, Kirby Samydurai. “Sometimes we visit kids at hospitals and when they see the sight of Stormtroopers, Jawa, BikerScouts, and Imperial Officers visiting them, you can really sense a change in the atmosphere. We always hope to make life better for others in need and donating blood is another way to do so.”
Star Wars Day is a fan-created day celebrated around the world every year on May The Fourth, a play on words based on the iconic saying “May the Force be with you”. It first started in the 70s, when Margaret Thatcher won the elections as Britain’s first female prime minister on 4 May 1979. Her victory was published with the headline ‘May the Fourth Be With You, Maggie. Congratulations’ – a proof of Star Wars’ vast influence in society.
Since then, fans celebrate this day in a variety of ways, from community to cosplay events, to special screenings and even corporate-sponsored events, all organized to celebrate the epic saga unfolding in a universe far, far away that captured – and continues to capture – the hearts and minds of fans both young and old.
