Hollywood continues to double down on its musical adaptations, this time with a big-screen live-action treatment of Wicked. Universal Pictures is looking to bringing this Broadway musical fantasy to screens in time for Christmas in 2021.
Wicked has been in development for the past several years at the studio but it was temporarily put on the backburner due to the production of Cats. That production is currently underway, headlined by Taylor Swift.
As far as Wicked goes, the story will reportedly follow the stage musical, which is both a prequel and sequel to the Wizard of Oz. The Broadway musical currently stars Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth as Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West) and Galinda (the Good Witch) respectively.
Universal Pictures has tapped Marc Platt (La La Land) to produce the film with Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliott) to helm the project. Wicked will be facing some stiff competition during the lucrative Christmas season with projects from Disney and Warner Bros as well as Avatar 3 due around the same time.
