The first official image of Shazam! has been released, showing Zachary Levi suited up as DCEU’s Captain Marvel. Director David F. Sandberg is helming the story, which revolves around a 14-year-old boy who is bestowed powers and turns into the superhero when he shouts the name ‘Shazam!’. Levi has slipped into the role quite nicely and looks the part of the buffed hero, and in terms of tonality, this DCEU effort doesn’t seem as dark as previous films. Shazam! flies into cinemas April 2019.
Billy Dee Williams Back For Episode IX
Despite being missing from the previous two films, Billy Dee Williams looks set to reprise his role as Lando Calrissian in Star Wars: Episode IX. Williams’ involvement will be interesting as J.J. Abrams’ looks to close out the new trilogy. The Lando character first appeared in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi with Donald Glover recently portraying the suave intergalactic gambler in Solo. Star Wars: Episode IX arrives in cinemas in late December 2019.
Jeremy Renner Joins Spawn
Todd McFarlane’s Spawn has just found its Detective Twitch Williams in Jeremy Renner. It looks like the actor has set his sights on another comic book franchise as he has been confirmed to star in the Blumhouse adaptation of Spawn. Renner will star alongside Jamie Foxx who is headlining the movie as Al Simmons a former CIA black ops agent who is murdered only to return as a demonic but heroic hell spawn. Spawn will be directed by McFarlane, the creator of the character, and is due to arrive in cinemas in 2019.
Joker Movie With Joaquin Phoenix is Happening
Warner Bros is doubling down on the Clown Prince of Crime by greenlighting a Joker standalone movie starring Joaquin Phoenix. This origin standalone tale will reportedly begin filming soon with director Todd Phillips. Warner Bros though is also exploring another Joker tale with Jared Leto, who starred as the character in Suicide Squad. Considering the studio’s track record with the DCEU, the news of having this many Joker related films, is questionable considering the shape the DCEU is in at the moment.
Neill Blomkamp to Reboot RoboCop
District 9 director, Neill Blomkamp is set to reboot the RoboCop franchise. The film reportedly titled, RoboCop Returns will see the robot cop making his triumphant return to fight crime and corruption in Detroit. The premise sounds like a carbon copy of the Paul Verhoeven classic and one wonders if the concept of a cyborg law enforcement officer still works in today’s movie market place. RoboCop was rebooted before in 2014 with actor, Joel Kinnaman, but that film didn’t strike a chord with audiences at all upon its release.
New Image: The Crimes of Grindelwald
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald will be arriving in cinemas this November, which is why we have a new promo image from the film. This time around we see a younger Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) giving a magic lesson to a young Newt Scamander. The photo is most likely suggesting a back story between the two, which will lend weight to the overall plot of the sequel. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald will see the Hogwarts teacher recruiting his student to help stop dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) as he sets out to raise an army of pure-blood wizards.
