After scoring over a half a billion dollars at the box-office, it made financial sense for Warner Bros. to green light The Meg 2. The sequel will be directed by Ben Wheatley, who previously helmed Rebecca.
The Meg took a sizeable bite out of the box-office when it arrived in cinemas in summer 2018. The film, based on the best-selling novel by Steve Alten centred on a prehistoric shark or Megalodon, which resurfaces to wreak havoc on humanity.
Grossing USD530 million, the film was led by Jason Statham, Li Binging and Ruby Rose. A sequel was expected right after but now it seems apparent that Warner Bros. wants to expand the film into a franchise. In terms of source material, the studio will have ample supply of stories to tell about giant sharks as Alten has several books based on the ‘Meg’.
Statham is expected to return for the sequel, reprising his role as United States Navy diver, Jonas Taylor who goes head to head with the monster from the deep. The Meg 2 does not have a release date as yet.
