The last time we saw SpongeBob Squarepants on the big screen was in 2004. Now, after 11 years, the world’s most famous sponge makes his movie return with an all-new adventure. And from what we’ve seen it looks like our favourite sponge who lives in a pineapple under the sea is as crazy as ever.
The Story: The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water kicks off in Bikini Bottom where things are pretty much the same. Spongebob is relishing his job at the Krusty Krab with his nemesis, Plankton up to his old tricks of trying to get his hand on the secret Krabby Patty formula. However, trouble soon brews when a diabolical pirate from above manages to steal the secret formula with the aid of a magical book. With Bikini Bottom thrown into chaos, it’s up to SpongeBob and Plankton to band together in order to get it back.
What Worked: The movie retains the fun and the same elements seen in the Spongebob Squarepants animated series complete with pointless and senseless jokes and punchlines. Basically you get to watch a one and a half hour stretched out Spongebob cartoon, which is actually not so bad if you’re a long-time fan.
What Didn’t: For a big screen movie, the animated runs out the same with the exception of several live action sequences and several 3D-enhanced scenes.
Plus Points: The live action scenes depicting the gang as superheroes, and typical Spongebob humour.
Minus Points: Well, it’s just pretty much brainless.
Conclusion: The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water is what it is and that’s an extended Spongebob Squarepants episode with the addition of Antonio Banderas. For fans of the series, the movie works delivering a nostalgia feel but other than a walk down memory lane, there’s little else going for Spongebob’s big screen return. Check your brain at the door for this one and you’ll end up enjoying it a whole lot more.
