It’s taken 19 years for a follow-up but the new Shaft film is finally here this time coming in as an action comedy instead of a gritty actioner. Starring Samuel L. Jackson, the new film centres on JJ, aka John Shaft Jr. (Jesse T. Usher), a cyber security expert with a degree from MIT, who seeks out his dad to uncover the truth behind his best friend’s untimely death.
Absent throughout JJ’s youth, the legendary locked-and-loaded John Shaft (Jackson) agrees to help his progeny navigate Harlem’s heroin-infested underbelly. And while JJ’s own FBI analyst’s badge may clash with his dad’s trademark leather duster, there’s no denying family. Besides, Shaft’s got an agenda of his own, and a score to settle that’s professional and personal.
From director, Tim Story, Shaft also stars Richard Roundtree, the original O.G. Shaft, as well as Regina Hall, Alexandra Shipp, Matt Lauria, Titus Welliver, and Cliff “Method Man” Smith. The film comes to cinemas in mid-June 2019.
