Director Ridley Scott is apparently putting together plans for Gladiator 2, a follow-up to the award-winning blockbuster starring Russell Crowe. According to Deadline, Scott is working alongside Top Gun: Maverick screenwriter, Peter Craig for the treatment.
Reportedly this sequel will follow Lucius, the son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) in the first film. But as intriguing as it may sound, it is a tall order for a director such as Scott to follow-up such a fine film such as Gladiator – especially when he doesn’t have Russell Crowe as Maximus to rely on.
Then there’s the fact that Hollywood hasn’t produced a memorable swords and sandals film since Gladiator. Films such as Exodus: Gods and Kings and Pompeii struggled to find audiences when they were released.
Scott is currently busy working on the comic adaptation of Queen & Country and working with Disney on a treatment for a movie based on the young wizard Merlin.
