Disney and Pixar is giving Disney+ subscribers a treat this Christmas Day with the premiere of Soul on the streaming platform for free. With questions still looming around the reopening of cinemas, Disney made the call to release the animated feature with no extra cost. The studio previously released Mulan on Disney+ for a premium fee of USD29.90.
Soul was originally set for a theatrical release in June but those plans were shifted to November. With the health crisis still a major concern, The Walt Disney Company decided to shift the film to its streaming platform entirely, which is a great enticement for Disney+ subscribers and potential members.
The new Pixar animated adventure addresses the afterlife with the tale of a middle-school band teacher named Joe Gardner who gets to realise his dream of playing at the best jazz club in town. However, a small misstep takes him from the streets of New York City to The Great Before – a fantastical place where new souls get their personalities, quirks and interests before they go to Earth.
Voicing the lead character in the film is Jamie Foxx with Pete Docter (Inside Out, Up) serving as director. Also lending their voices to the characters of Soul are are Tina Fey, Ahmir Questlove Thompson, Phylicia Rashad, and Daveed Diggs. The film also boasts an original score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross as well as new jazz music by Jon Batiste.
