It looks like Mortal Kombat is on the cusp of receiving a full-length feature reboot soon with director James Wan at the helm. The New Line Cinema property, based on the hit ultra-violent video game will reportedly be based on a new timeline and centre on a hero who finds himself in the middle of an inter-dimensional battle with Earth-bound warriors and fighters from Outworld.
Mortal Kombat enjoyed great success with a movie in 1995, which spawned a sequel two years later. The property also had a web-based series produced by Machinima, which garnered great reviews. It is unknown if the new property will be based on a whole new sleight of characters of based on characters featured in the game. Either way, producers won’t be short of utilising the game’s vast history of fighters, which spans over two decades.
The biggest piece of the puzzle in all of this could be Wan’s involvement with the film. The highly-sought after director has a full plate of projects including sequels to The Conjuring and Aquaman. So it remains to be seen if he can helm this one and do his part to turn the franchise around.
