Disney has started production on Maleficent 2, the follow-up to the highly successful re-telling (with a twist) of Cinderella. Stars Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning are returning to play the characters of Maleficent and Aurora respectively with Joachim Rønning (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) directing.
No release date has been given yet for the sequel but it should arrive in cinemas by 2020. The fantasy adventure picks up several years after Maleficent, in which audiences learned of the events that hardened the heart of Disney’s most notorious villain and drove her to curse a baby Princess Aurora.
Maleficent 2 continues to explore the complex relationship between the horned fairy and the soon to be Queen, as they form new alliances and face new adversaries in their struggle to protect the moors and the magical creatures that reside within.
Joining Jolie and Fanning on this new adventure are Michelle Pfeiffer as Queen Ingrith and Harris Dickinson as Prince Philip, with Chitwetel Ejiofor, Ed Skrein, and Robert Lindsay. Also returning are Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple, and Lesley Manville.
