Last Lonely Night, a short film by Shiroku Production, Marna Films and Big Asia Pictures wins the prestigious DigiCon6 Gold Award for the Malaysia League, hosted by Veedo supported by MDEC. They will proceed to compete in the 18th DigiCon6 Asia on November 19th 2016.
Peter Chin took a walk beyond his comfort zone of commercial production when he decided to pursue a creative passion project and make a short film. Little did he know that Last Lonely Night would not only win the Gold Award in DigiCon6 Malaysia, but the honour of representing Malaysia in the 18th DigiCon6 Asia regional short film competition in Japan.
Last Lonely Night is a film about an American detective pursuing a mysterious lover in 1930’s British Malaya. Described as an experimental film noir, it is definitely a short film that sets itself apart from its contemporary counterparts in the local film scene.
Chin, the brains behind prominent production house Shiroku Production has always focused more on producing commercials and branded content. But he has always had a fascination for fantasy/fiction-type films and the creative process involved with making these films, which came to a head after a chat with a friend, who interestingly also took on the lead role for his film.
The film, shot over the course of only two days, came with its own set of challenges – especially when Chin had to figure out how to create not only 1930’s Malaya, but also scenes that were set in downtown Chicago and a hotel in London.
Once the film was finished, Shiroku Production submitted the film for several international film festivals. Chin saw that DigiCon6 had a short fiction category and decided to submit Last Lonely Night for the competition.
Last Lonely Night was also chosen as one of the Official Selection Corti Da Sogni Worldwide Fiction (film festival) in Ravenna, Italy in May 2015. Chin adds: “I feel optimistic that we will inspire and awe audiences in Japan, as we did in Italy”.
Set to be held on the 19th of November in Tokyo, the 18th DigiCon6 Asia is an annual competition hosted by Tokyo Broadcast System to seek out new talents across Asia and showcase them to potential buyers and collaborators around the world.
The Malaysian leg of the competition, hosted by Veedo, with support from Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) recently announced the five winners for the competition. All five films will be submitted for the main regional competition – however, Gold Award Winner Last Lonely Night will be representing Malaysia to go up against the best from other countries in the region.
