We have seen her in Twilight and Charlie’s Angels but now Kristen Stewart will take on the role of Princess Diana in a new biopic. Spencer, which is being directed by Pablo Larraín, centres on the life of the late princess during her tumultuous marriage to Prince Charles.
Larraín directs from a script by Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders). The story will reportedly take place over Christmas where Diana decides to officially end her marriage. The film will also star Timothy Spall, Sally Hawkins, and Sean Harris.
According to the official synopsis: December, 1991: The Prince and Princess of Wales’ marriage has long since grown cold. Though rumours of affairs and a divorce abound, peace is ordained for the Christmas festivities at Sandringham Estate. There’s eating and drinking, shooting and hunting. Diana knows the game. This year, things will be a whole lot different.
In the first release image Kristen looks the part of the princess, even mirroring one of her iconic looks. In a statement to the press, Stewart said, “Spencer is a dive inside an emotional imagining of who Diana was at a pivotal turning point in her life.”
She adds, “It is a physical assertion of the sum of her parts, which starts with her given name: Spencer. It is a harrowing effort for her to return to herself, as Diana strives to hold onto what the name Spencer means to her.”
Stewart is the latest to portray Princess Diana. Recently Emma Corrin played the young princess in Netflix’s The Crown Season 4. Elizabeth Debicki will take on the role in season five of the series. Spencer is currently in production and is scheduled for release sometime in quarter four of 2021.
