Despite its criticisms, Warner Bros and DC are diving straight into the lucrative superhero franchise with a Batgirl film, with possibly Joss Whedon at the helm. Whedon is no stranger to the genre having helmed two Avengers films for Marvel. He also pencilled a script for a Wonder Woman film, which did not get made.
Whedon is an interesting choice to say the least for a Batgirl standalone adventure. But it remains to be seen how he will adapt to the current DC superhero landscape that has been developed by Zack Snyder. It is also rumoured that this cinematic incarnation of Batgirl will be closely related to the New 52 storyline seen in the comic books.
Nevertheless it seems Warner Bros is confident enough to invest in an expansion to the DC cinematic universe, and specifically the Bat-verse. Already there is a standalone Batman movie in the works as well as a film focusing on Nightwing and the all-female ensemble, Gotham City Sirens. Having a Batgirl film joining the fray could open up further collaboration and crossovers within each respective franchise.
Batgirl though has appeared on the big screen before played by Alicia Silverstone in Batman & Robin directed by Joel Schumacher. No casting details have been given with regards to the actress that could potentially carry the mantle. Many expect the actress to be an A-lister to add gravitas to the project.
