Joker just won the top prize at the Venice Film Festival. Todd Phillips’ film is now a recipient of the Golden Lion award, one of film’s most prestigious awards. With Joker now a certified award-winner, many are wondering if the film’s critical buzz, might gain it a clear shot at the Oscars next year.
Judging by the trailers we’ve seen, Joker is going to tell a story that is quite unique and as far removed from most comic book films we’ve seen to date. Joaquin Phoenix is in the lead, channelling the crown prince of crime with a story that centres on the origins of iconic villain.
Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck a.k.a. Joker, is of a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fractured society. A clown-for-hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night…but finds the joke always seems to be on him.
Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Fleck makes one bad decision that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty character study.
Joker also stars Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Frances Conroy, Marc Maron and Brian Tyree Henry. The film is produced by Phillips and Oscar nominee Bradley Cooper under their Joint Effort banner. It arrives in cinemas 3 October 2019.
