Although the DCEU seems to be in shambles, the animated properties of DC and Warner Bros are in a good place. Proof of that is in the form of Gotham by Gaslight, the new animated movie from Warner Bros Animation sees Batman in the 1800s going up against Jack The Ripper.
The animated film is based on a DC Comics one-shot by Brian Augustyn and Mike Mignola, with inks by P. Craig Russell. Although not originally labelled as such, Gotham by Gaslight is considered to be the first Elseworlds story from DC Comics.
For non-comic book fans, Gotham by Gaslight takes place In 1889 with Bruce Wayne on a tour of Europe. During his visit a series of murders takes place involving women take place, making the Batman a prime suspect.
Later on, the same murders occur in Gotham City, hinting that Jack The Ripper has made his way across the pond and into Batman’s home turf. Looking to protect his home and uncover the villain, Batman relies on his pure detective instinct to hunt down and stop the serial killer before it’s too late.
