20th Century Fox has officially pushed X-Men: Dark Phoenix to February 2019, several months after its original release date of November 2018. The X-Men sequel isn’t the only casualty as New Mutants; the upcoming X-Men spinoff has also been delayed to August 2019, more than a year after its April 2018 release date.
This news is disappointing nonetheless for X-Men fans. Despite Deadpool 2 coming out later this year, there will be no other films within the X-Men universe being released. Dark Phoenix was looked upon as a soft reboot of sorts for the franchise, leading the series into a new direction under the directorship of Simon Kinberg.
New Mutants was also viewed to be a bit of a departure for the franchise as it was due to take on a more horror-centric feel under director Josh Boone. The shake up is likely down to production delays as well as FOX strategizing the ideal timeframe to release these films in order to maximise their position at the box-office.
