The trend of turning beloved Disney animated fairy tales into live-action films continues with Beauty and the Beast. Billed as an epic live-action retelling of the fairy tale, the project has already secured Harry Potter star, Emma Watson to portray Belle in the film. The announcement was made by Disney with this release:
Actress Emma Watson has been cast as Belle in Disney’s upcoming live-action interpretation of Beauty and the Beast. The film is directed by Bill Condon and produced by Mandeville Films’ David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman. Production is anticipated to begin later this year.
The Beauty and the Beast project has been discussed for some time, in fact since 2012 with Guillermo del Toro attached to direct, but it has basically been on the back burner at Disney since. Now with one of the main characters already cast and Twilight Saga director, Condon at the helm, it would seem that momentum is finally gaining on bringing this tale as old as time into cinema screens.
No word yet on when exactly Disney is planning on releasing this film into cinemas.
