In a rather smart and shrewd business move, FOX is looking to release a Deadpool 2 PG-13 cut for the big screen later this year. The announcement was teased by Ryan Reynolds on social media with a photo of Deadpool reading a storybook to Fred Savage, a spoof of an original scene from The Princess Bride.
A Deadpool 2 PG-13 cut makes a lot of sense as it takes very little money to produce, most of it being put to re-cutting and editing the film for a younger audience. It also allows FOX (and Disney) to test the waters in the market, which could ultimately pull Deadpool away from its R-rating, if it is successful. Plus, it’s a given that you’ll also have Deadpool fans going to the cinema to compare both films.
The Deadpool 2 re-release though will arrive at Christmas, in a week dominated by some pretty big films. Taking the spot occupied by Alita: Battle Angel, which has been pushed to early next year, the Deadpool 2 PG-13 will go up against Warner Bros’ Aquaman, Paramount Pictures’ Bumblebee as well as a couple of smaller films such as Welcome to Marwen and Holmes & Watson.
But since Deadpool 2 already made a killing at the box-office earlier this year with over USD700 million, FOX will literally print money at this point for this re-release at Christmas.
