Marvel fans are still reeling from the dismissal of director James Gunn from Guardians of the Galaxy 3. And now Dave Bautista has gone to bat for the director stating that he would prefer to be released from his contract or cut him completely from the film if the studio decides to scrap Gunn’s script.
“Where I’m at right now is that if [Marvel] don’t use that script, then I’m going to ask them to release me from my contract, cut me out or recast me. I’d be doing James a disservice if I didn’t,” said the former pro-wrestler turned actor in an interview with UK’s Shortlist magazine.
Frankly, having a third Guardians film without Bautista’s Drax the Destroyer is unthinkable as he forms an integral part of the superhero team. In fact, Drax is arguably one of the most popular characters in the franchise, providing great comedic relief and scene stealing moments.
The handling of Gunn’s dismissal hasn’t gone well for Disney and Marvel and with a re-hiring potentially off the cards, the studio may have to reboot the franchise or even shelve it indefinitely until a new director is able to take over the reins.
As for Bautista, it is commendable that the actor has stood up for Gunn, especially as it could mean the end of his spell in the MCU. In a worst case scenario, Disney may well have to re-cast Drax or leave his fate as it were following the end of Infinity War.
