20th Century Fox is banking heavily on mutants for 2018 with confirmation that the next instalment of the X-Men franchise will be based on the Dark Phoenix. The storyline was first tackled in the X-Men: The Last Stand but it would seem that this new incarnation will remain true to its comic book origins.
Dark Phoenix was teased in the 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse, when mutant Jean Grey released the full force of her powers to defeat Apocalypse. It is now apparent that FOX intends to capitalise on that tease into a full length movie that will continue the adventures of the X-Men following its soft reboot that started with X-Men: First Class.
FOX has inked in a November 2018 release for Dark Phoenix and it won’t be the only mutant superhero film released by the studios next year. Joining the fray will be sequel Deadpool 2 as well as New Mutants, both of which will also open in cinemas in 2018.
Deadpool 2 will be occupying a June 2018 slot, putting it in the thick of summer where the merc-with-a-mouth will have to go toe to toe with other mega blockbusters released that month.
