Da Costa is the latest female filmmaker to join the ranks of filmmakers who will helm a comic book film. She stands in good company too with the likes of Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman), Cate Shortland (Black Widow), Chloe Zhao (The Eternals) and Cathy Yan (Birds of Prey).
The first Captain Marvel film was an origins flick that told the story of Carol Danvers, a US Navy pilot who becomes a superhero after she comes in contact with a mysterious alien artefact. The film takes place well before the events of Iron Man, which kick-started the whole Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The sequel however is expected to jump forward to present times following the events of Avengers: Endgame. It is also expected to introduce a number of new characters into the MCU fold such as Ms. Marvel.
Captain Marvel 2 is written by Megan McDonnell with Larson reprising her role as the titular heroine. The film is scheduled to arrive in cinemas in July 2022.
